Tribute to Grandad

This poem was written by Millie age 8 to her Grandad
on his 74th birthday.

Grandad, grandad
Oh how i miss you.
Oh how i wish i could be held in your arms.
Your spirit and love, keeps me going.
The brightest star in the sky.
Grandad grandad.

My love for you will never fade.
You keep my insides warm.
I will never let you go.
The brightest star in the sky.
Grandad grandad.
.
How i wish you were here.
You help me through tough times.
You will live in my heart forever.
The brightest star in the sky.
Grandad grandad.

Iwas and still am lucky to have you as my grandad.
I will promise that i will not let you down.
Please guide me to avoid the wrong and learn the right.
The brightest star in the sky.
Grandad grandad.

I would do anything to get you back.
I understand why you had to go.
I will treasure the fact i have siblings.
The brightest star in the sky.
Grandad grandad.

The ones you love
may never go away
they walk beside you every day. xxxxx

Musical evening

On Saturday 13th November 2010 Hazel and Malcolm held a Music evening with a buffet and
wine refreshments.

At the start of the evening, 22 guests were welcomed with a glass of bubbly and were entertained by Steph Scott, no relation, who
sang to her own guitar accompaniment.

Steph’s contribution was followed by a music quiz comprising of 27 introductions to popular songs, show tunes, film scores and classics. These tracks, played just long enough to tease, were compiled
by Malcolm, caused much head scratching.
The answers were defined by playing a second selection of tracks which were long enough to identify the tunes. Contestants were paired up by
selecting names at random. The winning couple managed of score of 18 out of 27.

Sylvia and Malcolm then sang a small selection of songs before a raffle was drawn to complete the evening.

Our sincere thanks go to all who made the evening a great success by providing raffle prizes, helping with catering, entertaining, sending donations in
lieu of attending and to Hazel and Malcolm for hosting this fun event. The total raised was £180.

Greetings Cards

Robbie Johnston likes to make greetings cards.
Robbie and Alister have known Iain for many years. When Iain passed away and they heard we had set up a Breath of Life Fund in his memory, they wanted to help.
Robbie gave me a good selection of cards.
Over the time we have sold a great number and i am delighted to be able to donate another £50 to the fund.
Thankyou so much Robbie and Alister.

Tribute to Iain

The following was prepared by Ross Newton and read out by friend Malcolm Stuart at Iains funeral on 8th September 2009.

Iain or Scotty to many, was a founding member of Letchworth Velo Club formed in 1959 by a small band of enthusiastic roadmen.
They quickly turned their attentions to both Road Race and Time Trial promotion. This was in order to ensure a full season of racing for themselves, at a time when gaining entry to events was far from easy.
In doing so they performed an enormous service to cycling racing in the South East with the provision of more than a dozen open races a season from the early sixties onwards. These events were immensely popular with riders from London, Northants and East Anglia as well as surrounding counties. Competitors also came from much further afield.
In 1990, and only a matter of days before the clubs annual two day race, Iain received a call from Keith Lambert asking if he could accomodate the entire British Pro cintingent who had been left without an event following an out of the blue race cancellation.
Brilliant as always in a crisis situation, Scotty accepted the challenge, and an outstanding weekend of racing took place won by the mercurial Joey McLoughlin from a field that included the late Dave Rayner and the entire whos who of Btitish Pro Racing at that time.
In the late nineties and following a chance encounter with Womens National Champion Maxine Johnson Iain directed the clubs attentins to womens racing with Maxine at the forefront of what became an all conquering Letchworth Velo Ladies Team.
The fact that this highly talented group of ladies won the team prize for all four National RTTC events,5,10, 25, and 100 miles in the same year, an RTCC record, says a lot about the ladies. It also says an equal amount about the organisational and motivational skills of Iain and his small band of helpers.
One of the more recent events that Iain and the Letchworth Velo organised was the 1999 National Womens Road Race held on an extremely tough windswept circuit near Royston. This was won by sixteen year old Nicole Cooke from her breakaway companion, and world reigning World Pursuit Champion, Yvonne McGregor.
It was always one of Iains proudest claims that he had the honour and privilege to subseqently manage Nicole when he took a team of ladies from various clubs, including Letchworth Velo, to Malta to compete in a stage race.
Iain was always the first to reconise that he and the Letchworth Velo were lucky to have been around when the traffic, policing and insurance problems of today did not exist.
Much of his success was due to the fact that whether you were first or last in a race and indeed whether you were in his club or someone elses he was always there to physically support you and give encouragement.
He also recognised that every Club Member, regardless of what position they occupied on race days, were equally important to the success of the operation.
What Iain, his right and left arms Brenda and Sarah, and all the members of the Letchworth Velo achieved together, was an absolute joy to experience. It made the kind of stuff from which legends are made.
Iain leaves his beloved family, wife Brenda, daughter Sarah, son in law Ross and grandchildren Lewis, Millie and Daisy.

My sincere thanks to Ross Newton who prepared these notes.

Brenda asked for donations to The British Lung Foundation, and would like to thank everyone for their support.

We have now set up The Breath of Life Fund in memory of Iain, and would ask for your continued support in all fundraising.
Thank you all Brenda and Sarah.
